Creatures of Comfort to shut doors
Nov 2, 2018
Laid-back LA-based fashion house Creatures of Comfort announced via Instagram on Thursday that it will close up shop next month.
"Dear Friends," the label wrote on its Instagram, "after 14 exciting years in business, Creatures of Comfort will be closing its doors on December 17 of this year. Web will close on December 10." The post continued, "creating our own collection, and sharing our home with so many talented artists and designers over the years, has been an inspiring experience for all of us. Thank you for all your support and partnership throughout our time together."
Founded and led by creative director Jade Lai in Los Angeles in 2005, the label opened its first flagship store, located on Mulberry Street in New York City, in 2010. That same year, the brand debuted its first Fall/Winter collection and quickly caught the attention of fashion editors for its modern, minimal-yet-quirky collections inspired by everything from Cher to Mexico City.
A favorite of celebrities like Rashida Jones and Reese Witherspoon, the brand's "eponymous private label was conceived with a lifestyle in mind: simple and stylish, ease over fuss," according to the Creatures of Comfort website. The brand regularly partnered with fellow designers for accessories, including collaborations with Sandgrens and Clyde.
Currently, the brand operates only two permanent stores, its New York City flagship as well as a sister store in Los Angeles.
It seems the news is already resulting in a flood of mourning shoppers – currently, a banner at the top of the label's online homepage reads, "due to high volume of orders we are experiencing delays with shipments."
