Sporting goods retailer Decathlon is moving forward with its North American expansion plans with a new store in Montreal.
The France-based company is expected to open in the Montreal Eaton Centre next fall. The 38,000-square-foot space will be the first to open in a downtown location in Canada.
"We are delighted to be coming to the Montreal Centre Eaton, a location that will quickly become a vital element of our retail presence in Quebec," said Tristan Vendé of Décathlon Canada.
"This location in the downtown core, which is a relatively new approach for us, will enable us to deliver even more effectively on our brand promise, which is to make sport accessible to as many people as we can.
The sporting goods retailer operates some 1,432 stores in 42 countries around the world. It entered Quebec just this spring with a location in the Champlain shopping center in Brossard, located in the outskirts of Montreal.
As part of the store launch, Decathlon is kicking off a campaign to name the location.
"Every Decathlon in the world is identified by its community, neighbourhood or building," Vendé added. "By opening the vote to citizens, we are asking them to make this choice and we pledge to adopt the name that will garner the most votes."
At the beginning of the year, Ivanhoé Cambridge announced a $200 million investment into The Montreal Eaton Center.
The makeover will include the merger of the Montreal Eaton Center with neighboring mall the Complexe Les Ailes, which together welcome more than 30 million visitors annually.
The mall is expected to be under construction until 2020.
