Toronto-based Canadian fashion designer Sid Neigum has won a $50,000 3D printing grant.

The grant awarded by the Be3Dimensional Innovation Fund and Think2Thing, a 3D printing atelier, will allow Neigum to create new designs using 3D technologies.

Though two grants were awarded in 2016 in the art category, Neigum is the first to receive it in the fashion category.

"The capabilities of 3D modelling, scanning and printing are extremely exciting in garment construction and design," said Neigum, in a news statement.

His designs, which often involve sculptural work, has been recognized through various awards including the Toronto Fashion Incubator's New Labels Award, the Mercedes Benz Start-Up Award, and CAFA Emerging Talent Award.

“We can’t imagine a more deserving recipient of the first grant from the Be3Dimensional Innovation Fund in the area of Fashion than Sid Neigum. We look forward to working with Sid at Think2Thing to develop exciting fashion designs using cutting edge 3D technologies,” added Think2Thing Design Director David Didur.

Neigum was selected as the grant recipient by a jury of Canadian Fashion industry veterans led by Jeanne Beker.

The Be3Dimensional Innovation Fund was established to support Canadian innovators who are pushing the boundaries of 3D printing, scanning and modelling technologies and its application in art, medicine, manufacturing, engineering, fashion and design.
