Dr. Martens Airwair USA has recalled over 30,000 vegan boots in the US and Canada after it discovered wearing them exposed people to the toxic dye chemical benzidine.

The boot style is the unisex Vegan 1460 eight eye boot. Approximately 30,000 were sold in the US and an additional 900 were sold in Canada. The recall covers the cherry red boot with black laces, a classic Dr. Martens silhouette. The boot originally retailed for $125 a pair.

Benzidine was historically used as a component in dyes, particularly for fabric and leather. It was phased out of industrial and commercial use in the US as its cancer-causing properties were discovered. According to the National Cancer Institute, benzidine exposure is linked to bladder cancer. The recalled Dr. Martens were made in Vietnam.

Most of the affected shoes were bought online through Dr. Martens, Amazon and Shoebuy as well as other websites from January 2015 thought July 2017. In store purchases made at Dr. Martens, Journeys and other independent stores also are included in the recall.

Dr. Martens Airwair USA issued the recall after finding that "prolonged and direct contact with the boot tongue lining can expose the wearer to the chemical."

Consumers are being told to immediately stop wearing the boot and contact Dr. Martens for a full refund or replacement.

According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission no injuries have been reported yet and the recall is preventative.
