Ebay removes sneaker seller fees for listings over $100

Published
Dec 19, 2019

Online marketplace Ebay has announced that it is launching zero selling fees for North American customers selling sneakers for over $100 and has also revealed a calendar of new footwear drops to end the year.

To be able to take advantage of the zero selling fees offer – the first of its kind on Ebay – customers’ sneakers must be listed in the Men’s and Women’s Athletic Shoes category, and the $100 minimum price cannot include shipping, handling, taxes or fees.

“As the originator of the sneaker resale game, Ebay continues to be a top source for emerging and collectible styles, and with high demand, we want our sellers and buyers to get in on the action," explained Jeff Chan, Ebay’s head of men's footwear and apparel, in a release. "For our community of diehard sneakerheads, eliminating selling fees allows them to turn their kicks into more cash to fund future purchases, and results in a more robust sneaker inventory for shoppers everywhere.”

With nearly 6 million pairs of sneakers sold year-to-date on Ebay in North America in 2019, the site is one of the biggest platforms for sneaker resale, boasting an average of 1.5 million daily live listings in the category.

As 2019 draws to a close, the platform is hosting two drop series. Kicking off on Tuesday, December 17, the Week of Sneaks will see Ebay drop four different colorways (Analog, Inertia, Geode and Salt) of the Yeezy Boost 700 over four days. Each pair will go on sale under retail for $215.

The Best of the Best 2019, on the other hand, is a seven-day auction event running Thursday, December 19 through Thursday, December 26. Ebay has teamed up with Stadium Goods to drop eight of the most hyped sneaker releases of the year, with initial bids starting at $0.99.

Sneakers on offer will include the Air Jordan 1 x Off-White NRG “Off-White UNC,” the Air Jordan x Travis Scott, the Air Force 1 MCA, the Yeezy Boost 350 v2 Black Static Reflective, the Yeezy 700 Magnet, the Nike Off-White Dunk Low University Gold, and two colorways from the Nike x Sacai LD Waffle Collection: green and blue.

The December drops follow the platform’s pre-release of the Air Jordan 11 Bred in partnership with seller Chris Holbrook, aka Sneaker Jesus, which sold out in under four minutes.

In its announcement of the drops, Ebay also honored the five top sneaker trends on the platform this year, highlighting the Air Jordan 1 as by far the most popular design sold on the North American website this year and naming Nike as the top-selling brand.

The success of the Nike x Sacai LD Waffle made it the platform’s breakout collaboration of the year, while the SpongeBob SquarePants x Nike Kyrie 5 “Sponge Bob” proved to be the most popular collaboration overall by quite some margin.

The hottest new release of the year was the Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 V2 Black, while the 1985 Vintage Original OG Nike Air Jordan 1 was the rarest pair of sneakers sold on the platform.

Ebay currently has 183 million active buyers around the world, as well as more than 1.4 billion listings across categories including men’s and women’s clothing, accessories and footwear, electronics, houseware and furniture.
