Fake fashion from China seized in Spanish port: ministry

MADRID, March 13, 2008 (AFP) - Police have seized more than 230,000 fake shirts, sports shoes and other fashion items shipped from China in the biggest-ever haul of its kind in Spain, the economy ministry said Thursday March 11th.

The goods -- which filled six cargo containers, and valued at more than 100 million euros (155 million dollars) -- were found at the Mediterranean gateway port of Algeciras, it said in a statement.

The items -- which also comprised belts, ties, wallets, jackets, suits and watches -- and bore the names of 45 major brands including Nike, Calvin Klein and Versace.

The cargo containers, loaded in the southern Chinese port of Yantian, were officially destined for Morocco.

China is one of the world's biggest sources of counterfeit goods, with genuine producers complaining that their reputations and profits are being undermined by cheap imitations.
