Fashion Revolution Week launches with new theme

Published
Apr 24, 2017

Fashion Revolution Week, the week-long global campaign demanding greater transparency in the fashion industry, has officially begun, launching on Monday with the annual Fashion Question Time at the Houses of Parliament.

Fashion Revolution

Running from Monday 24 to Sunday 30 April, the movement aims to raise awareness about the working conditions and wages of workers in the fashion supply chain following the 2013 Rana Plaza tragedy where 1,138 people lost their lives.

More than 90 countries will see several events take place exploring the campaign’s new theme ‘Money, Fashion, Power’. The campaign focuses on the flows of money and the structures of power across fashion’s supply chains, centring on the ‘real’ price of clothing manufacturing.

“Have you ever wondered who makes your clothes? How much they’re paid and what their lives are like? Our clothes have gone on a long journey before they hit store shelves, passing through the hands of cotton farmers, spinners, weavers, dyers, and sewers. Eighty percent of them are women between the ages of 18 and 24. Many of the people who make our clothes live in poverty. This needs to change,” said Fashion Revolution Co-founder Orsola de Castro.

Fashion Revolution Week 2017 will feature events and activities worldwide to encourage people to think differently about the clothes they buy. The calendar of events and initiatives includes Garment Worker Diaries, a project created in partnership with Microfinance Opportunities to document the daily lives of 540 garment workers in Cambodia, Bangladesh and India.

Designers are also invited to take part in the Open Studios initiative and open their spaces to consumers, helping them understand the invisible process behind their finished collections.

A number of social media influencers are also sharing YouTube videos with their own #haulternative.

In the UK, the list of events includes catwalks, panels discussions, film screenings, swapping evenings, school quizzes and fash-mobs.
