First body measurement study in Mexico

Published
Aug 3, 2010

Through the National Apparel Industry Association, and with the support of TC consultants, Mexico will conduct the first study in Latin America on the average body measurements and proportions for its population. Taking body measurements from a statistically valid sample, in different geographical areas of the country, information will be relevant for many surrounding nations.

A sample of human body measurement technology in third dimension of the Body scanner, to be representative of the Mexican population.

With the economics ministry's support and advice from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), the measurements were taken from a sample of 16.021 people; of both sexes, of ages between 18 and 65, from all major cities in different areas of the country.

The respective percentage of people's size was recorded by area, city and gender. The total time to process the measurement per person was about 10 minutes.

The data gathered n the study will be used for various services and industries, but mainly in the garment and design industry.

Product developers from the apparel industry will now be provided with data to better serve consumers which will contribute to retailers and clothing manufacturers' business performance.

Armed with more precise measurements of the average human body of Latin America, current problems related to manufacturing and clothing marketing will be minimalised.

The country's regional knowledge can ensure the right amount of raw material is used, according to the characteristics of its inhabitants, which will result in inventory reduction, savings in the use of fabrics, correct clothing fits; impacting positively on the environment.

With regard to Industrial Design, machinery and industrial equipment will be adapted to the suit the more precise shape of Mexicans; useful for industries such as automotives, aerospace, national defense, furniture, footwear, architecture, to name just a few.
