Global football market should generate 12.5 billion euros in 2014

Published

In 2014, the global football market* will generate 12.5 billion euros, up 8% compared to 2013, says the NPD Group. It’s a result that should be boosted by the World Cup, which starts in Brazil in a few days. The research company also points out that, since 2006, the football market has grown by an average of 4% per year.

The football market is estimated to generate 12.5 billion euros in 2014.

“Even years, when the European Championship or the World Cup are on, show upward trends while odd years remain stable. In addition, we believe that the growth rate will slow down in the next 5 years due to a saturation effect on the European market and the aging of the world population (...)," said Renaud Vaschalde, sports analyst for NPD Group Europe.

This year, the World Cup should contribute to the overall sports market with growth of 1% - about 2.7 billion euros of additional revenue. It’s an effect especially resulting from the sales of World Cup soccer jerseys and balls. During the 2010 World Cup, NDP measured a 9% growth in sales of jerseys as compared to 2009 in five major European countries. Sales of balls are expected to grow by the same proportion.

"40% of the growth attributed to the "World Cup" effect arises from products directly attributable to football (soccer jerseys and balls), while demand for sports brands in general, stronger during a period involving so many major sporting events, represent 60% of the increase," says Renaud Vaschalde.

As regards different markets, the United States, Brazil, the United Kingdom (where football makes up 10% of the sports market) and Germany are the top 4 countries with the largest football-related turnover.

France ranks in the top 10 alongside Mexico, Italy, Spain, China and Japan. In France, where hiking and cycling are very important, football generated a 400 million euro turnover in 2013, representing only 3.8% of the sports market.
