Graduate Fashion Week kicks off despite London Bridge attack

Published
Jun 5, 2017

Graduate Fashion Week launched at The Old Truman Brewery in London on Sunday morning only hours after a terrorist attack at London Bridge and Borough market killed seven people and injured 48, however organisers said the incident didn’t keep visitors away.

"I have been overwhelmed, given the terrible incident Saturday night in London that it hasn't stopped people from coming along," said chairman of GFW Mark Newton Jones on Monday.

In light of recent safety concerns, Graduate Fashion Week has introduced bag searches for all attendees upon arrival and increased further security measures on site. The event is working with Wilson James, one of London’s leading security companies, which specialises in event and airport security and is in regular contact with the Metropolitan Police, it announced on its website.

The first day of Graduate Fashion Week saw a full programme of catwalks, displays, interactive events and tutorials for students and attendees.

Students from universities including Northbrook College Sussex, Sheffield Hallam University, University of Central Lancashire, University of Salford, Edinburgh College of Art, Northumbria University and University of East London showcased their creations on Sunday in a number of catwalk shows, while talks explored topics like developing a collection and the evolution of the beauty industry.

A ceremony announced the winners of the Boux Avenue Swimwear & Lingerie Award, the Dame Vivienne Westwood Sustainable and Ethical Award, the David Band Textiles Award and the New Media Award. Further prizes will be presented throughout the three-day showcase.

Attracting over 30,000 guests each June, the annual event showcases the work of over 1,000 students and graduates. Graduate Fashion Week will run until the June 7.
