Gucci taking its next cruise show to San Francisco

Gucci is going abroad again with its cruise collection, and will stage its cruise 2021 show in San Francisco on May 18.

The destination marks the farthest distance travelled by Gucci to stage a resort, nearly 10,000 kilometers from the brand’s birthplace in Florence.
 
Gucci’s show will be one of the last stops on the global cruise show calendar, with over a half dozen brands staging their resort shows in disparate parts of the planet. Three days after Gucci, it is Prada’s turn in Japan on May 21; and four days after that, Max Mara will present in Saint Petersburg on May 25.
 
Armani will open the wildly distant series of cruise shows with a catwalk event in Dubai on April 17, timed around the 10th anniversary of his hotel and luxury residence inside the Burj Al Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. Hermès will show in London on April 28; while Chanel is planning Capri on May 7, just two days before Christian Dior presents its cruise collection in Lecce, the capital city of Puglia where the house’s creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri hails from.
 
Last year, Michele took resort relatively nearby to the Capitoline Museum in the heart of Ancient Rome; underlining his preference for culturally symbolic locations. It followed shows in such diverse locations as Dia Art Foundation in New York; the Cloisters of Westminster Abbey; the Palatine Gallery in Palazzo Pitti in Florence; and most spectacularly of all, in the antique Roman cemetery of the Promenade Des Alyscamps in Arles.
 
“Creative Director Alessandro Michele has chosen the Northern Californian city for its history as a center of liberal activism. A cultural melting pot and the setting for many historic moments that have shaped the world, San Francisco is a symbol for liberty, where antidotes to discrimination have been cultivated, sowing the seeds for freedom of self-expression for many,” Gucci said in a release.
 
“This spirit represents Alessandro Michele’s vision for Gucci: the acceptance of diversity and the right to be oneself.  Unveiling the collection in the city will also reconnect him with his most personal raison d’être: a celebration and validation of self-expression, emancipation and ultimately, freedom,” the brand added.
