H&M and Lyft offer free rides for apparel recycling

Published
Jan 23, 2019

In an effort to encourage New Yorkers to donate clothing to H&M's Garment Collecting program, the retailer has partnered with Lyft to give free rides to city dwellers looking to recycle their apparel at any H&M store.

Running from January 22 through January 27, the first 5,000 H&M customers interested in donating clothing can use the promo code HMRECYCLES to get a free ride up to $10 to any H&M location in New York City. Additionally, customers will receive 15 percent off their H&M purchase in return for a donation, which can include clothing from any brand and in any condition.

According to a statement, this partnership is part of a broader mission by the two companies to tackle the issue of climate change and boost circularity in fashion.

Since H&M's Garment Collecting program began in 2013, the company said it has collected 163 million pounds of textiles globally.

In its own environmental effort, Lyft committed to full carbon neutrality and 100 percent renewable energy by offsetting the carbon emissions from all Lyft rides in 2018. The transportation company has also has partnered with cities and public transit agencies across the U.S. to launch bicycle and scooter programs, including NYC's Citi Bike, and has set a goal to achieve 50 percent shared rides by the end of 2020.

This newest sustainability effort by H&M comes as diverse fashion industry players, from mega-retailers to luxe labels like Tommy Hilfiger, are paying increasingly close attention the environmental impact of apparel production and consumption when forming their business strategy.
