Following a tough first quarter heavily impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, Birmingham, Alabama-based sports and footwear retailer Hibbett Sports announced on Thursday that it has opened its 56th North Carolina location in Winston-Salem.
Located at 1223 Silas Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem’s Parkway Plaza, the open-concept store spans 5,600 square feet. Customers will be able to shop in store or take advantage of buy-online-pick-up-in-store, online reservation and curbside pick-up services, options which are particularly important as the coronavirus crisis continues to be a source of apprehension for consumers.
The store will stock athletic apparel, footwear and sporting equipment from brands including Nike, Jordan, Adidas and Under Armour, among others. The location has also been designed to facilitate shoppers’ navigation around the store, making it easier to find popular items, such as new releases and exclusive products.
“My team and I are excited to open our doors and provide the Winston-Salem community with a great shopping experience," said the new store’s manager, Sihem Smith, in a release. "We are passionate about fashion and sneakers and we love helping customers find exactly what they are looking for.”
Although a limited number of the company’s more than 1,100 Hibbett Sports and City Gear stores were allowed to remain open during the shelter-in-place measures introduced throughout the U.S. in reaction to the coronavirus pandemic, most of the retailer’s locations were temporarily closed.
These closures led to a 21.4% decrease in Hibbett Sports’ first-quarter net sales, which totaled $269.8 million, despite strong growth of 110.5% in the group’s e-commerce channel. Quarterly net loss at the company came to $15.3 million, or $0.92 per share.
As of the end of May, more than 1,000 of Hibbett’s stores had reopened.
