Italy: revenues drop in first part of summer sales

Published
Aug 26, 2013

Special offers and discounts haven’t managed to boost consumer activity in Italy during the summer months. Federazione Moda Italia, a group affiliated with the Italian business organization Confcommercio, assessed data from questionnaires sent to more than 700 businesses throughout Italy. According to its initial report, revenues during the first part of the sales period showed a decline of 7.5% on average, with sales receipts averaging around 80 euros.

In the first part of the sales season, which began in July, there were more sales on the commercial streets of large cities and in tourist regions, as well as on streets renowned for designer shops, thanks to tourists from rapidly developing countries such as Russia and China. Meanwhile, in outlying areas results were more than disappointing. In Milan, the trend was slightly better, with sales down only 5.5%. More than 63% of the businesses surveyed by Federazione Moda Italia reported a decline in sales revenues.

Consumer protection association Federconsumatori went so far as to call it “a real debacle.” In a press release, the Italian group noted, “Revenues during the sales show a drop of more than 9% this year. This national average is tempered by the influx of tourists to the larger cities, since in areas lacking this influx, sales have plunged by 17%.”
