Ivanka Trump faces class-action lawsuit

Published
Mar 21, 2017

Ivanka Trump's brand is under fire yet again, this time facing a class-action lawsuit.  The plaintiffs are filing under the grounds that the Ivanka Trump brand has an ‘unfair advantage’, because it has the Trump seal of approval.

A California retailer is claiming that because Ivanka’s eponymous brand bears the same name as the president of the United States, it poses ‘unfair competition’ to other retailers.

Modern Appealing Clothing is seeking compensation for damages incurred competing against the brand. These damages date back till November 9th, the date Trump was elected president of the United States.

Modern Appealing is claiming that Ivanka has a leg-up on the competition from “from Donald J. Trump being the President of the United States and from Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared, working for the President of the United States.”

Ivanka Trump’s line has been facing backlash after backlash since Trump announced his candidacy. Ivanka began stepping back from her brand in November of 2016, then further choosing to remove herself completely from the label in January of 2017.

Even though Ivanka Trump is no longer personally involved with her own label, major retailers, like Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and Burlington, have begun dropping Ivanka Trump’s products. Despite this, the Ivanka Trump brand saw sales skyrocket, increasing 346% between January and February.
