John Galliano reappears in Russia where he has joined the world of cosmetics

Moscow, May 22, 2014 (AFP) - The British designer John Galliano, virtually unseen since his dismissal from Dior in 2011, appeared on Thursday in Russia during a show put on by L’Etoile, the largest chain of Russian cosmetics which has taken him on as its new creative director.

For the appearance, the brand did not skimp, organizing the event in one Moscow’s most exclusive suburbs.

The former artistic director of Dior only appeared for a few seconds, however, appearing in a halo of orange smoke at the end of what resembled a space-themed fashion show, and during which the Madrilenian dancer Patrick de Bana performed solo, before disappearing, leaving the journalists hungry for more.

"This is an opportunity and a great challenge for me," he confided a little later, however, in an interview with the news agency Itar-Tass.

"I am confident that our partnership will lead to new and exciting events in the world of beauty for Russian women. I think the results are beautiful and inspiring," he added.

Considered one of the greatest talents of his generation, John Galliano spent fifteen years at Christian Dior before being fired in March 2011 after making racist and anti-Semitic remarks while drunk in a Parisian cafe, which earned him a suspended 6,000-euro fine. It was an affair that shattered his career.

Having virtually disappeared since then, he briefly returned to the spotlight at the New York Fashion Week in February 2013, following a very much lauded show by the designer Oscar de la Renta, on which he had collaborated.

L'Etoile, which has 850 branches in more than 250 Russian cities, announced his appointment a few days ago with a statement entitled "John is back”.

His appointment as creative director of L'Etoile, one of whose brand ambassadors is the French singer Patricia Kaas, was welcomed by the Russian press.

"European designers have amazingly realized that a true creative life is not possible in Europe. But it is in Russia,” said the Russian news website Vzgliad.

The Jewish community in Russia, however, does not see it that way.

"This will make a lot of people stop buying L’Etoile’s cosmetics. This is a moral and ethical decision,” said Boroukh Gorin, spokesman for the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia to the agency Ria Novosti.

In an interview with Vanity Fair magazine in 2013, John Galliano admitted that he was an “alcoholic” when he had made his anti-Semitic statements, an episode of which he claims to have no recollection.

"When I saw it [the video] I vomited ," he said at the time.

"This is the worst thing I've said in my life, but I do not think that... I tried to understand (...) I think I was so angry and so unhappy with myself that I just said the meanest thing possible," he said in attempted justification.
