Lacoste and Awake NY launch first collaboration

Lacoste announced on Wednesday that it is teaming up with Angelo Baque’s label Awake NY for a capsule collection that reimagines Lacoste’s iconic pieces.

The unisex 12-piece collection was inspired by the French sporting codes of Lacoste’s heritage and reinterpreted by Awake NY for the bustling streets of Manhattan and its surrounding neighborhoods.

To design the collection, Baque dove into the Lacoste archives and handpicked pieces from the brand’s history to then update for the collaboration.

“Partnering with Lacoste gave us the opportunity to do something unexpected,” Baque said. “Their preppy aesthetic is very different from our own. Accessing the archives and immersing myself in Lacoste’s heritage really inspired us to create something that’s both versatile and functional. Any two pieces from the collection can be paired together.”

Characterized by deep greens, blues, reds and cream, the collection includes classic t-shirts featuring Lacoste’s signature piqué cotton, and crewneck sweatshirts and fleece bottoms that act as a nod to classic ‘90s sweatsuits. Completing the collection is a striped polo, checkered cardigan, Campers baseball hat and embroidered jumper.

Items feature both brand’s logos in a jacquard technique — symbolising the union of Lacoste and Awake NY — with oversized logos that blend the iconic crocodile silhouette with an “A” varsity letter on select pieces.

“Lacoste’s collaborations are an opportunity to bring together creative worlds that are seemingly opposed to each other,” added said Louise Trotter, Lacoste artistic director.

“It’s about co-creating, pushing the limits, reinventing Lacoste ad infinitum. This is the very essence of cultural dialogue; from two different languages, we create a third.”

The collection in now available on lacoste.com and awakenyclothing.com and is expected to launch at select retailers as of Friday.
