Local shopping events pop up across Canada

Published
Mar 23, 2017

The turn of the new season always marks an important opportunity for retail sales and the Canadian market is well aware.

Starting this month, consumers will see a slew of independent shopping events pop up in major Canadian cities. They vary in location, size and offering, but their main missions remain the same; bringing items from local designers to consumers.

Starting this weekend in Toronto, One of a Kind, will take over the city’s Enercare Centre. Items will include everything from Fashion accessories, to children’s clothes, to body care products from hundreds of makers. Among clothing designers, big names from Canada’s design scene will be on-site including Eve Gravel, Melissa Nepton, Muttonhead, Annie 50 and more.

Next, The Big Fashion Sale by Quebec Designers will kick off in Montreal, April 6 to the 9. Followed by stops in the Quebec cities of Gatineau, April 13 the 15, Sherbrooke, April 21 to the 23, and Quebec City, April 28 to the 30. The event, which sales samples and inventory surplus from Quebec designers at 50 to 80 percent off, will include brands such as Message Factory, Bodybag by Jude, Rudsak, Yoga Jeans, Veronique Miljkovitch, Jennifer Glascow and more.

In western Canada, the Nifty for Fifty sale will take place on April 9. The sale will offer discounts on local designers such as jewellery designer, Carolyn Bruce Designs, sustainable women’s fashion line, Torn Clothing, as well as returning brands Allison Wonderland and Erin Templeton.

What’s more, later this year on May 5 and 6, Canadian apparel pop up INLAND will be back in Toronto. The list of exhibitors has not yet been revealed.

The effort to promote local designers through annual and semi-annual sales eventa is a part of Canada’s history. Shopping events like One of a Kind have been around since 1975 and The Big Fashion Sale by Quebec Designer begun in 1994. Meanwhile, the Nifty for Fifty sale will be celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.
