Loewe Foundation’s 2022 Craft Prize to be awarded in Seoul

Contemporary craftsmanship will thrive next spring for the fifth edition of the Loewe Foundation’s Craft Prize, whose award ceremony will be held in Seoul, after the last edition was staged 100% digitally due to the pandemic. The Spanish luxury label announced on Tuesday that it has issued a call for applications for the award, and that participants will be able to submit their entries on loewecraftprize.com until October 25 2021.

Nearly 3,000 artworks from 107 countries were submitted for the award’s 2021 edition, with first place going to Chinese artist Fanglu Lin for her work entitled SHE (2016), which highlighted the weaving heritage of the women of the Bai minority from China’s Yunnan province. Fanglu Lin also received a monetary prize of €50,000.

The Loewe Foundation’s Craft Prize is the brainchild of Loewe's Creative Director Jonathan Anderson. It was first awarded in 2016 to “showcase and celebrate excellence, artistic merit and originality in the field of contemporary craftsmanship.” The award recognises exceptionally skilled artisans who create objects of great aesthetic value. The concept is linked to the very origins of Loewe, which was founded in 1864 as a collective artisanal workshop.

“Craftsmanship will always be modern. It consists in creating objects that feature a formula and language of their own, fostering an artistic conversation that did not previously exist. It is about novelty as much as tradition,” said Anderson in a press release.

A panel of experts made up of artists, craftsmen, authors, curators and designers will be responsible for drawing up a shortlist of 30 artists, based on criteria such as originality, vision, accuracy of execution, materials excellence, innovation and their own individual hallmark. For this edition, the new panellists are Peter Bauhuis (metal artist and Craft Prize finalist in 2021), Jiyong Lee (glass artist and Craft Prize finalist in 2021), Juha Marttila (leather goods design director at Loewe), Kavita Parmar (textile designer) and Zizipho Poswa (ceramist).

The works by the 30 short-listed artists will be exhibited in Seoul, and the prize jury will choose the winner among them in spring 2022. The jury's new members are Magdalene Odundo (a Kenya-born British ceramist), Abraham Thomas (curator for modern architecture, design and decorative arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) and Fanglu Lin, winner of the Craft Prize’s 2021 edition.

The Loewe Foundation was created in 1988 as a private cultural institution by Enrique Loewe, from the fifth generation of the label's founding family.
