London Fashion Week highlights from Day 1

Hot on the heels of New York Fashion Week, designers kicked off London's grand fashion event by proving cool Britannia rules the runway. This time, with glamorous masculine-feminine tailoring and by making uncool accessories cool.

Turkish designer Bora Aksu delivered a delightful take on boy meets girl styling. For fall, embellished short suits, billowing crocheted dresses and sheer glamour puss blouses came in a cool palette of lavender, grey, navy, royal and powder blue, counterbalanced with nude tones and metallic gold accents.

Royal College of Art graduate Eudon Choi went back to basics, and tapped the 70s styling trend. Outerwear was by far, the designer's forte, exemplified in his wide-lapelled jackets, military chic parkas. Contrasting spot inserts and patch pockets were also noteworthy details this season.

Choi seemed to strike just the right balance of workwear and evening wear. His more glam offerings included jaunty cerise, ochre and black satin statement dresses.

Quirky socks and clumpy Jesus sandals rocked an arty-inspired runway show by the Central Saint Martins-trained designer Minnan Hui.

Did the ultra thick-soled summer shoes in metallic leather have global warming, or warmer Eastern climates in mind? Did we mind? No, because one of London's biggest strengths is its ability to rise above the style diktats and produce playful fashion.

3D asymmetry was the key direction for Hui's lively Fall15 collection. Sculptural tiered and layered silhouettes featuring bold color, geometric prints and check underlined Day 1's optimistic mood, and served as a reminder that the designer majored in fabric print design.
