Loro Piana, the nearly century-old Italian luxury brand specialized in cashmere and wool has opened its second NYC store in the Meatpacking District.

Located at 3 Ninth Avenue, the 1,700-square-foot boutique was initially operated as a pop-up store from May through December 2019. The location, which reopened as a permanent store on Monday, December 14, joins the brand’s Madison Avenue flagship in New York.

The new store offers both men’s and womenswear, including apparel, accessories and footwear, as well as a selection of home items. In-store services include knitwear personalization and made to order programs for Open Walk, Summer Walk and Flexy Walk footwear.

Designed by Belgian architect Vincent Van Duysen, the store features clean lines and an earthy color palette, bringing together Portland stone wall cladding, European oak finishes and metal accents that have been painted white and aged.

The centerpiece of the space is a glass-enclosed winter garden, which will be updated four times a year to reflect the changing seasons.

At opening, the store also showcases a striking installation from artist Marie Watt, of the Seneca Nation. Entitled “Companion Species: Acknowledgement, Blanket Stories and Generations,” the piece was commissioned by the Loro Piana team and features three sculptures made of stacked blankets.

Donated by friends of the brand, including Dakota Fanning and Suki Waterhouse, the blankets are both an homage to the heritage of Loro Piana, which began life as a blanket-making company, and a reflection of Watt’s work and culture.

“In my tribe, we give blankets away to honor people for being witness to important life events. I’m interested in how we are born into blankets and depart this life in a blanket and between, we are constantly wrapped up in them,” the artist told Vogue.

“I’m drawn to Loro Piana’s acknowledgment and commitment to community,” she added, explaining her reasons for collaborating with the brand. “And not only customers but growers, breeders, animals, and land. They cultivate sustainable resources and take pride in making exquisite, beloved heirloom objects.”

Customers visiting the new store can see “Companion Species: Acknowledgement, Blanket Stories and Generations” until January 31, 2021.

As part of its ongoing philanthropic commitments in the U.S., Loro Piana has also announced the launch of a new charitable initiative which will see the brand donate one blanket made of repurposed fabric to the North American branch of Save the Children for every purchase made in its U.S. and Canadian stores and website until December 24.

Loro Piana’s latest New York location is its 23rd store in North America. The brand currently has 178 stores around the world, 149 of which are operated directly by the company, with the remaining 29 being run by franchisees.
