Macy’s appoints Dennis Mullahy as first chief supply chain officer

Ohio-based department store operator Macy’s, Inc. announced on Monday that it has appointed 30-year industry veteran Dennis Mullahy to the position of chief supply chain officer, a newly created role at the retailer, which is currently undergoing restructuring.

In his new position, Mullahy will oversee the complete journey of all Macy’s products, from global sourcing to both in-store and online distribution, via inventory management, transportation and indirect procurement. These responsibilities will also involve dealing with issues including supply chain systems, sustainability and supplier diversity. Mullahy will report to Macy’s President Hal Lawton.

The Ohio State University graduate joins Macy’s from Michael Stores, Inc., where he most recently served as executive vice president, supply chain and IT, a role in which he oversaw the company’s supply chain, IT systems and manufacturing.

Prior to this, Mullahy was a senior vice president at Ulta, where he was responsible for leading the beauty retailer’s merchandise planning and inventory management, as well as its distribution, logistics, transportation and supply chain strategy.

Earlier in his career, the executive also spent 15 years serving in a range of leadership positions at regional supercenter retailer Meijer, as well as working as a partner at Accenture.

“I’m thrilled to have Dennis join the Macy’s team as we look to strengthen our supply chain. We are investing in our supply chain to improve our systems, processes and facilities and to enhance productivity and efficiency,” said Lawton in a release. “Dennis is an exceptional leader with more than 30 years of experience in retail operations and supply chain management. I am confident that he is the right person to lead the newly formed supply chain organization at this pivotal time.

The new appointment comes on the heels of the department store chain’s announcement at the end of last month that it was cutting 100 senior positions as part of a restructuring process being implemented following disappointing holiday sales.

At the time of this announcement, the company also revealed that it was planning to improve its profitability by working to make its inventories and supply chain more efficient, a strategic focus which goes some way to explaining the retailer’s latest hire.

Mullahy’s appointment is effective April 8, 2019.
