Malls, non-essential businesses ordered to close throughout Canada

Business in Canada is about to be put on hold as Quebec and Ontario, the countries most populous provinces, announced on Monday that non-essential businesses must close by midnight Tuesday.

After announcing on Sunday the closure of all malls in Quebec until May 1, the province’s premier François Legault said on Monday it was also necessary to fully shutdown non-essential businesses until April 13.

Not long after, Ontario’s Premier Doug Ford announced the same need for non-essential businesses to close for 14 days.

Essential businesses so far include mostly groceries, pharmacies, and liquor stores.

In the country, Quebec now has the highest rate of Covid-19 with 628 confirmed cases, followed by Ontario with 504 cases. In total, Canada has over 2,000 confirmed cases.

On Tuesday, parliamentarians will return to address emergency legislation, but earlier during the day on Monday Prime Minister Trudeau addressed the country with a stark warning:

"Enough is enough. Go home and stay home. This is what we all need to be doing and we're going to make sure it happens.”

Over a week ago, Trudeau started announcing social distancing measures to protect Canadians.

In the midst of the pandemic, many Canadian retailers - from the likes of like Aritzia, Lululemon and Canada Goose - started taking preventative measures including temporarily closing their stores.
