Mango prepares latest new concept store in UK as it opens revamped Paris site

Published
Sep 20, 2022

Mango is continuing to roll out its Mediterranean-inspired New Med concept to stores around the world and is currently preparing to open its latest in the UK, at the giant Bluewater shopping mall. The work comes just after the debut of its Saint-Lazare refurbishment in Paris.

The revamped Mango store in Paris

The company revealed the Paris store at the weekend with an enlarged and changed fitting room area, incorporating USB plugs and light adjustments, and new technologies and services that have been added to improve the customer shopping experience. They include a Committed Box for recycling garments and a specific click & collect area for collecting and returning orders.

The renovation is part of Mango’s expansive new store refurbishment plan, the aim of which is to incorporate this new retail concept in stores beyond its flagships.

It chose Paris as its latest location as it “considers France a strategic market and aims to expand its presence in the country with the opening of more than 70 new stores over the next few years, to bring the total to 300 stores by 2025”.

The revamped store is located at 1 Cour de Rome Street in Paris in an indoor shopping centre with nearly 80 shops that’s one of the country’s key malls.

The new store covers retail space of 730 sq m and sells the Woman and Kids lines.

It’s one of the first Mango stores in France to get the New Med concept. As well as the features already mentioned, it offers a tailoring service and RFID technology for improved stock control.

There’s been a lot of criticism of large retailers in recent periods over the environmental impact of their revamp and rebuild works and Mango said that “true to its commitment to sustainability, the architectural project of renovating this new store has been conceived to generate a low environmental impact”.

The existing structure has been retained “and a second life has been given to the floors and ceilings and installations such as the air conditioning. The lighting has been substituted for LED low-energy consumption technology, and during the refurbishment process, certified ecological paint and natural materials like wood have been used”.

Mango has been in France since 1998 and at year-end 2021 had 223 stores there (111 company stores and 112 franchises).

It has a long history in the UK too and is planning a new concept store at Bluewater, one of the key shopping destinations in the Southeast of England.

The company previously had a store at the mall — on the ground floor near anchor tenant John Lewis — but that closed several years ago. The new store is very well situated, on the first floor, several doors along from the large Zara new concept store. Importantly too, it’s also adjacent to Apple, a shopper magnet at the mall.

It will also be a welcome addition to the fashion offer at Bluewater given the closures that have been seen in recent years. In the gallery that Mango will occupy, Karen Millen, Warehouse and Oasis have all closed, while around the corner, the mall has lost former Arcadia brands Topshop, Miss Selfridge, Dorothy Perkins, Evans and Wallis. But good news is that a Calvin Klein store will open there soon.
