Canada’s top designers and fashion industry professionals were center stage in Toronto on Friday night at the Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards (CAFA), hosted by style maven Joe Zee.

Montreal-based designer Marie Saint Pierre accepts The Womenswear Designer of the Year Award - Facebook: The Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards

The fifth annual ceremony, held at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, honored designers from categories such as womenswear, menswear, accessories, as well as style icons like Céline Dion who won the 2018 International Style Icon Award and booming international businesses like The Aldo Group, whose founder Aldo Bensadoun was honored with the 2018 outstanding achievement award.

“It is truly surreal to be celebrating our 5th Anniversary of CAFA,” said Vicky Milner, President, CAFA, in a news statement. “When we started CAFA back in 2014, we only dreamed that five years later the awards would turn into what they are today. We are grateful for the opportunity to continue to shine a spotlight on the outstanding talent we have here in Canada.

Among the winners, Montreal-based designer Marie Saint Pierre was recognized with the womenswear designer of the year award, while fellow Montreal brand Atelier New Regime was named menswear designer of the year.

In the accessories category, Toronto-based handbag company, Ela, beat shoe brand Zvelle and Vancouver’s Herschel Supply Co to take home the accessory designer of the year award.

Meanwhile, among emerging talent in the Canadian landscape, Toronto-based womenswear label, Markoo, headed by designers Tania Martins and Mona Koochek, was recognized in the fashion category, while fine jewelry creator Sofia Zakia received honours in the emerging accessory category.

New this year, the outerwear designer of the year award, which recognizes a Canadian outerwear designer who has made a lasting impact on the outerwear industry in Canada and abroad, went to Canada Goose.

Among other industry professionals, Petra Collins received the image maker of the year award; Karla Welch took home the stylist of the year award; the model of the year award was presented to Simon Nessman; Canadian model Aleece Wilson received the fresh face of the year award; and the digital fashion influencer of the year award went to Maripier Morin.
