Mexico is biggest US trading partner for first time
For the first time in its history, Mexico has become the largest trading U.S. partner, after trade between the two countries reached $97.41 billion (€87.45 billion) in the first two months of the year.
According to data from the U.S. Department of Commerce published by Notimex, Mexican exports to the U.S. increased by 3.4% in January and February, surpassing both China and Canada as the country’s No.1 trade partner.
During the period, Mexico trade with the U.S. achieved a surplus of $13.17 million, rising to a record high that was up 29% on its trade surplus year-on-year.
Transactions with Mexico accounted for 15% of all U.S. trade worldwide, ahead of Canada (14.2%) and China (13.9%).
U.S. trade with China during the first two months of the year reached $90.3 billion, after recording a 13.5% fall on last year as a result of the protectionist policies promoted by the Trump administration.
