Francisco Cancino is leaving his role as creative director of Mexican fashion brand Yakampot after eight years at the helm. Huguette Hubard will become the new designer of the brand, which will show during New York Fashion Week for the first time this year.
According to a statement. Cancino is leaving to pursue new opportunities.
“We thank Francisco with all our heart for his years of dedication and passion for the development of Yakampot and we wish him all the best for the future," the firm said.
The designer added: “Ahead of my departure, I would like to thank each and everyone who was with me throughout these years and supported this cause. Thank you for joining me in this very exciting business. I look forward to continue building my legacy in my new venture as an independent designer.”
Hubard, who has acted as a creative consultant for the brand for five years, is joining the retailer as it moves forward with plans to expand abroad and enter new markets. “Yakampot will present at New York Fashion in September 2019 for the first time,” it announced.
She studied fashion design at the prestigious Central Saint Martins in London, and has worked in the creative team of several brands including Donna Karan, DKNY and Pringles of Scotland. As creative director of Yakampot, she will lead the label alongside CEO and co-founder Concepción Orvañanos.
During his time with Yakampot, Francisco Cancino built the brand into one of Mexico’s leading contemporary fashion businesses. Born in Chiapas, the designer’s aesthetic was inspired by traditional Mexican textiles, giving organic fibres such as cotton and linen a new interpretation. The brand has become a top name in Mexico, dressing local actresses and celebrities including Cecilia Suárez and Natalia Lafourcade, as well as collaborating with local brand Julio. In 2014, Francisco Cancino won the Who’s On Next award presented by Vogue Mexico.
