Michael Kors releases limited-edition #MKGO Graffiti capsule

NYC-based brand Michael Kors announced on Monday the release of the first retro graffiti-inspired collection in a series of limited-edition capsules, the launch of which will be celebrated with collaborative window displays to be unveiled in selected Michael Kors stores around the world.

The #MKGO Graffiti capsule includes jackets, shoes and bags featuring a black and white graffiti print that channels the New York street art scene of the 1980s.

“I started my company in 1981, at a time when uptown and downtown were really colliding,” said Michael Kors in a release, explaining the inspiration behind the collection. “Uptown girls partied downtown at the Mudd Club and Club 57. Artists like Fab 5 Freddy and Jean-Michel Basquiat showed their work at PS 1, and yet you’d still be just as likely to find their signatures on the side of a building in the LES or your subway car. Today, that mix of high/low is everything.”

To celebrate the capsule’s launch, the brand has collaborated with Candy Pratts Price and hair stylist Christiaan on a window display set to be revealed at seven Michael Kors locations spread across three countries. The display features a floor-to-ceiling screen print of Michael Kors in his iconic aviators, as well as rotating mannequins wearing pieces from the capsule and taking selfies.

Having begun her career designing the windows at Charles Jourdan and Bloomingdale’s, Pratts Price has since worked in a variety of editorial roles at a number of fashion publications including Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and Departures.

Christiaan has been active on the fashion scene since the 1960s, having previously collaborated with Vogue and created iconic hairstyles such as Debbie Harry’s choppy bob.

As part of the collaboration, the brand has also produced a video featuring Kors and Pratts Price which will be released on July 11th.

Customers will be able to see the window displays at the Michael Kors stores at Singapore’s Mandarin Gallery, the Jing’An Kerry Centre in Shanghai, and in Ginza, Japan from July 12. The windows will be unveiled at the brand’s stores at the Rockefeller Center and the Flatiron Building in New York, as well as on London’s Regent Street and Milan’s Corso Vittorio Emanuele on July 13.
