The Milan Furniture Fair has suspended its 2020 edition due to the Covid-19 emergency, rescheduling it to April 13-18 2021. “The decision to postpone was made by the Board of the Salone del Mobile.Milano in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic that is spreading to almost every country in the world,” stated the organisers in a press release.

The Covid-19 emergency first led to a postponement of the fair from April to June, as announced last February, but the situation “has now fundamentally changed. Although we were determined to keep to the June date, to allow the annual event to take place as planned, the present, unprecedented circumstances and medium-term uncertainties now mean that this year’s Salone can no longer go ahead,” added the organisers, saying that the 2021 edition, celebrating the Milan Furniture Fair’s 60th anniversary, “will be a special event for the entire sector.”

For the first time in fact, the Milan Furniture Fair, the International Furnishing Accessories exhibition and the Workplace3.0, S.Project and Salone Satellite events will be held together with their complementary biennial trade shows: Euroluce, already scheduled for 2021, as well as kitchen furniture events Eurocucina and FTK-Technology for the Kitchen, and the International Bathroom Furniture Fair.

Emanuele Orsini, president of FederlegnoArredo, the association of Italian wood furniture producers, said in a Facebook post that the decision to postpone the Milan Furniture Fair was “hugely painful,” both because it was prompted by an emergency as dramatic as the Covid-19 pandemic, which has hit Italy, and Milan’s region, Lombardy, especially hard, and also because it means postponing “the  most important design fair worldwide,” during which the city welcomes some 400,000 buyers each year.

Orsini added that FederlegnoArredo is standing alongside its associates and the entire industry in the battle against the coronavirus epidemic, and has made a donation of €500,000 to the regional institutions and bodies that are waging the front-line fight against Covid-19 in Italy. He concluded by underlining how the Milan Furniture Fair’s 2021 edition will be a truly special one, a crucial step for the recovery of the wood furniture industry and for Italy as a whole.
