Milan summer 2009 fashion week debuts Saturday

ROME, Sept 18, 2008 (AFP) - The global style spotlight swings to Milan on Saturday, September 20th where fashion week kicks off with more than 90 spring-summer 2009 collections to be sent out, highlighted by the much-awaited debut of Gianfranco Ferre's designer duo.

The ready-to-wear week opens as usual with an Elena Miro show for full-figured women followed as of Sunday by Emporio Armani, Moschino Cheap and Chic, along with Frankie Morello.

Also strutting its wares will be the Gianfranco Ferre fashion house, showcasing the first collections of two young designers, Tommaso Aquilano and Roberto Rimondi.

Following the 2007 death of its namesake and founder, Gianfranco Ferre struggled with the fallout of appointing Swede Nars Nilsson as artistic director -- who quit after five months on the job.

Giorgio Armani, Missoni and Burberry are on the menu Monday, followed Tuesday by shows by Salvatore Ferragamo, Bottega Veneta, Prada and Etro.

On Wednesday come collections by Roberto Cavalli, Gucci, La Perla and Antonio Marras, with those by Dolce&Gabbana, Max Mara, John Richmond and Fendi on Thursday.

Friday and Saturday are devoted to brands less known overseas, including AB Soul and Mila Shon, whose founder died earlier this month.
