MSGM puts the pedal to the metal in Milan

Published
Jan 14, 2019

MSGM celebrated speed in Milan on Sunday, taking its inspiration from racing cars, all the while steering clear of clichés. Not a single set of mechanic overalls in sight, nor any gadgets linked to Formula 1. Rather, everything was imbued with a "fast and furious" spirit in this collection, which subtly balanced sportswear and couture, and positively hummed with a fresh new energy.

"Turbo is like our new logo. The atmosphere is very 90s, and F1 driver Ayrton Senna acts as a common thread tying everything together, but above all his style and his life outside the racing paddock," explained creative director Massimo Giorgetti backstage, seeming to have stepped back into his stride with this collection for Fall/Winter 2019-20.

Everything was measured to perfection, with clean lines and garments artfully crafted in materials ranging from technical nylon to beautiful wools, cotton, eco-leather and marbled denim. The palette was a mix of classic greys, beiges, browns and vermillions with neon yellow, orange and pink, and each piece featured a multitude of details and graphical references.

Indeed, Massimo Giorgetti was clearly having a field day, remixing the Manchester United logo, pairing looks with Fila sneakers, embroidering Milan Cathedral's Madonnina along with the Italian city's skyline onto black or red leather jackets in white thread. Scorching flames licked up the legs of a black pair of pants and set entire silhouettes ablaze, while jacquard coats and jackets featured black and white images from Japanese manga series Captain Tsubasa, with a football on one piece looking set to fly straight off the fabric and into the audience.

The designer also played with the word "turbo", which was discreetly worked into logos on a number of pieces, as well as a handful of other slogans, such as "Run Away", which appeared on a pullover above a mini chequered flag, or "More Speed". To round things off with a touch of sophisticated flair, silk scarfs were knotted at models' necks or draped like a shawl over their shoulders.
