In an unusual move, Nautica has brought in 19-year-old rapper Lil Yachty as the Creative Designer for the brand. In his new role, the Grammy-nominated rapper will be designing a collection for the brand, alongside starring in social media and digital campaigns.

Karen Murray, President of Nautica, told the press in a statement, "We are excited to be collaborating with Lil Yachty this year. He is much more than just a music artist, he is a creative soul. His innate passion and affinity for the brand, fabulous taste level and the way he looks in our clothes, make him the perfect partner for the Nautica brand."

Nautica has already worked with the young rapper on previous collections. In November, Lil Yachty fronted the campaign and lookbook for Nautica’s collaborative collection with Urban Outfitters.

If his name is any indication, Lil Yachty has always had a strong affiliation with the brand before ever coming on to the creative team. The self-proclaimed boat enthusiast loves scouring the internet and thrift shops for vintage Nautica pieces. "Nautica is like a part of me. It's for kids, sailors, grown men, and cool people. The designs - the old designs, the new designs, I think it's dope. There's not really much out there like Nautica,” said the rapper.

Lil Yachty has frequently appeared on the cover of New York Times’ style section for his unique approach to fashion. The rapper, who was recently named one of Forbes' 30 under 30, is easily recognizable by his bright red dreadlocks.
