New Valentino eyewear under Akoni deal to launch in July

Published
Jun 30, 2022

Valentino is entering what it says is “a new chapter” for its eyewear offer with the July launch of its first products under the exclusive deal it signed with Switzerland-based Akoni Group late last year.

One of the new Valentino eyewear styles

Akoni is designing, manufacturing and distributing the new products with the first collection featuring three new styles “that will embody the Valentino Couture approach by utilising the finest materials and a combination of time-honoured and cutting-edge production techniques”.

The new eyewear is “100% produced in the finest workshop in Japan, utilising the highest quality materials and techniques” and the items have been linked very closely to the wider Valentino label with with names that underline key locations for the brand. The company said that there are “three models named after the numbers of the historical Valentino headquarters, a homage to the Maison”. The Paris Place Vendome link comes with model number VIII, Milan Turati via number XVI, and finally Rome Mignanelli via number XXII “where the heart of creativity with Pierpaolo Piccioli is”.

The theme running throughout all this is “the mastery of couture. The culture of couture and the rituals. Couture as a field where the processes remain traditional and unique but at the same time gives the possibility of experimentations”.

So what we get to start with is “a luxury high-end capsule collection made of three sunglass styles in 10 colourways”. The second drop in October will offer six additional styles.

They all feature the label’s signature codes such as its famous rockstuds and V-logo, as well as a colour palette “that clearly yet subtly conveys the brand’s Haute Couture heritage”.

Of the pieces launching now, Valentino VIII is “a feminine combined titanium and acetate cat-eye shape that marries 50’s retro-cool with a distinctly modern flair for timeless style, lightweight comfort, and lasting quality”. It features a “technically sophisticated design elements as Valentino 3D rockstuds on the top and front of the bridge, progressive twisted temples, extruded stud temple tips and custom hinges”. It’s available in heritage Valentino colour combos including black, clear brown and crystal bordeaux.

Valentino XVI is an oversized 80’s-inspired aviator shape with low base curve retro lenses and “a fashion-forward presence. The style is the ultimate aviator with its 3D Valentino rockstuds on the bridge, brow bar, temples, and temple tips completely made in Japanese titanium”. There are also multicolour gradient sun lenses beyond the eye rim “to enhance visual impact and highlight the complementary palette of sophisticated Valentino heritage colour combinations”.

Finally, number XXII “has been created to pay homage to Valentino’s Creative Director, inspired by his personal frame. “Featuring a modern interpretation of the retro 60’s Wellington shape made iconic by Golden Era Italian cinema”, it’s available in solid black, brown tortoise and mid-honey tortoise. The style features an 8mm thick front “sculpted to maximise volume and wearability with recognisable embellishments” including 3D Valentino rockstuds on the front, temples, temple tips, five-barrel hinges and custom wire core.
