Nike replaces Umbro as Canada Soccer supplier
Canada Soccer has scored! The sports association announced this week that Nike will be its new official footwear, apparel and equipment supplier as of January 2019.
Replacing Umbro, Nike will supply the Men’s and Women’s National Teams at every level.
Soccer has gained major traction in the country, especially since hosting the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015. The momentum has carried on through 2018 with the announcement that Canada Soccer will host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, alongside neighbours Mexico and the United States.
“It’s an exciting time for Canada and soccer fans in our country as we see all of our Canadian teams earning success on the pitch. As we look to continue this evolution, our collaboration with a world-class brand like Nike will only fuel the anticipation, excitement and unity that the sport will have as we prepare to welcome the world in 2026,” said Peter Montopoli, General Secretary, Canada Soccer, in a news statement.
Canada has traditionally favoured hockey as its national sport.
The new sponsorship announcement was accompanied by the release of a video produced by Canada Soccer. Featuring 2018 Canadian Players of the Year and Nike athletes, Christine Sinclair and Alphonso Davies, it highlights the sport and the notion of overcoming.
“This is a huge step forward for Canada Soccer, and we are thrilled to have Nike be the official equipment, apparel and footwear supplier,” said Christine Sinclair, Canada Soccer Women’s National Team Captain and 2018 Canadian Player of the Year.
“I can’t wait until 2019 when we get to wear both the Canada Soccer patch and Nike swoosh on our jersey as we head into the FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.”
The sportswear giant also currently supplies apparel for U.S. Soccer, England, and a number of other international teams.
