Apex data determined that approximately 40 percent of the publicity was positive, with 30 percent being negative and 30 percent neutral. The same day Kaepernick posted the ad on Twitter, Nike received more than $43 million worth of media exposure, according to Apex.

The ad sparked calls to boycott the company and enthusiastic criticism from many, including the U.S. president. However, others argue that the ad is a mutually beneficial move for both Kaepernick and the athleticwear brand, who have both gained attention for being controversial and politically relevant.

The relationship between Nike and Kaepernick began during his time as a professional athlete, as a result of Nike's apparel deal with the NFL. Kaepernick has not played for an official league team since his kneeling protest in 2016.
