Nordstrom rolls out Canadian credit card

Nordstrom, Inc. is expanding its loyalty program in Canada this week, in an effort to entice Canadian shoppers to shop more, more often.

The Nordstrom Rewards Visa credit card, which launched on Monday, will allow shoppers to earn Nordstrom points on their purchases wherever they shop.

Nordstrom Rewards Visa cardholders will earn two points for each dollar spent on purchases made at Nordstrom, as well as one point per dollar on purchases made outside of Nordstrom anywhere Visa credit cards are accepted.

For every 2,000 points earned, customers receive a $20 Nordstrom credit.

"We're continually looking for ways to enhance our customers' shopping experience and provide greater value for our loyalty program," said Michelle Haggard, Vice President and Regional Manager for Canada, in a news statement.

"Our Nordstrom Rewards Visa (credit card) is the must-have loyalty card for every fashion enthusiast. Canadian cardholders can start earning points on their spring wardrobe purchases and then redeem them in the summer when they're looking for a new vacation outfit."

Nordstrom entered Canada just over two years ago with big plans to amp up its Canadian sales.

The major U.S. fashion retailer will open its doors this September at the CF Sherway Gardens store in Toronto, bringing the retailer’s Canadian store count to six. The company also plans to open six new Nordstrom Rack stores in Canada in 2018 alone.

Still, it is a tough time for retail department stores and it is unclear if Nordstrom’s loyalty program will be enough to win shoppers.

Last week, Nordstrom’s shares dropped 3.7 percent, following the retailer’s first quarter results, which saw a 0.8 percent decline in its comparable-store sales for the period ended April 29. Fellow department store chain Hudson's Bay Co., didn’t have much more luck and also posted weaker-than-expected same-store sales.
