Public School returns to the NYFW schedule

Published
Dec 20, 2016

Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne recently ended their tenure at DKNY, and are now focused fully on Public School. The Creative Directors recently announced in an interview with Vogue that Public School is returning to the NYFW calendar and will present on Sunday, February 12 at 11 a.m.

In April, Chow and Osborne announced they would hold co-ed Public School fashion presentations in June and December, and they would do away with the seasonal collections for numbered collections instead. Pre-spring and Spring were “Collection 1” and Pre-fall and Fall were “Collection 2”.

Chow told the press that the change was made in order to “really develop our ideas cohesively throughout the year and subsequently slow the entire process down.” He added that they can enjoy the collections when not adhering to the schedule. What Chow didn’t mention at the time was how he and Osborne would have to hold two shows at every NYFW for Public School and DKNY if they didn’t move their brand off of the schedule.

The duo held DKNY and Public School shows in their first and second seasons with DKNY. They eventually moved Public School off of the NYFW schedule and moved the DKNY show to the usual Public School timeslot, which was on Sunday, September 11 at 11 a.m.

Chow told Vogue, “The hardest thing was being in one place and having to think about the other place. I remember being backstage at a Public School show and one of our head designers from DKNY was there shooting backstage, and I was like, “where are we right now?” In that two-block radius between our office and the DKNY office, you really had to switch. You know, there was a lot of talk about, “you stay in New York, it’s not like you have to go to Paris to do your duty, but that space actually could’ve benefitted [“from”?] the boundary between the two. Creating those boundaries was probably the most difficult part of it all.”

Chow and Osborne were named DKNY Creative Directors in April 2015, three months before Founder and Chief Designer Donna Karan parted ways with the company to focus on her Urban Zen Company and Foundation. LVMH sold Donna Karan International to G-III Apparel Group for $650 million in July 2016, and the duo, along with DKI CEO Caroline Brown, left the company in December.
