REI Co-op is set to open four new stores on Friday.

The stores will open in Farmington, Utah; Huntsville, Alabama; Oklahoma City and Williston, Vermont.

The expansion is part of larger plans to expand its brick-and-mortar presence, which includes the opening of eight new stores this year, two existing store relocations and expansions, and the opening of three new boathouses in 2019.

“Our business has never been just about selling stuff. Our bigger goal is to share our love of the outdoors and, in doing so, awaken that love in others,” said Tim Spangler, REI senior vice president of retail, in a news statement.

“By continuing to grow in new communities and new regions of the country, we look forward to welcoming more people to the co-op and connecting them to the activities they love. Over the coming years, we’ll do that through a mix of physical experiences – from traditional stores to gateway locations like our new store in North Conway, New Hampshire.”

Like its other locations, the new REI stores will offer a range of outdoor programs specific to the surrounding area’s environment, according to a press release.

Upcoming programs in Huntsville include Bike Chains and Derailleurs Workshop, Trail Running Basics, while in Utah upcoming programs in the area include Intro to Canyoneering, and Utah Avalanche Center.

As part of its commitment to support the outdoor communities of each of its store locations, REI said it will invest $20,000 in nonprofits in each city.

Over the last five years, REI has seen more than 27 percent growth in membership and 25 percent growth in revenue, much of which continues to come from brick-and-mortar retail.

REI currently has 158 stores in 37 states and the District of Columbia
