Ralph & Russo cancel SS21 couture collection, but will be back

Tamara Ralph & Michael Russo announced on Thursday that they won’t be proceeding with their Ralph & Russo SS21 couture collection and presentation.

The news comes as the UK-based business faces the same headwinds as other luxury designer labels with fashion weeks cancelled, massive logistical issues due to international and local lockdowns, and global clients unable to travel.

But they also said that house will return to showcase its couture offer from July this year with the assumption that the pandemic will be more under control by then as vaccination rollouts gather pace.

Fashion shows are key marketing events for upscale labels and this channel has largely been shut off for almost a year now. Only this week the British Fashion Council announced that London Fashion Week would be an all-digital affair next month. And last Friday the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode announced that this month’s Paris menswear and couture fashion weeks wouldn’t go ahead with live shows.

Some labels have opted for major digital shows instead during the pandemic with Burberry doing this last season. But that label’s heavy investment in such productions isn’t something that can be replicated by smaller businesses.
