Rana Plaza: tragedy’s anniversary becomes day of mobilisation

Published
Apr 14, 2014

On April 24, fifty countries will participate in an event intended to raise awareness about conditions for garment workers. Fashion Revolution Day, the name of the event, will commemorate annually the 1133 deaths resulting from the collapse of Rana Plaza.

The date of the Dhaka factory’s collapse may thus become the day dedicated worldwide to textile industry transparency.

"Fashion Revolution Day wants consumers to ask who made their clothes, to imagine the path that they have taken from the garment maker, to the dyer, to the spinner, all the way to the farmer who grew the raw material," says organizers. “With that in mind, we are encouraging them to participate starting now by wearing their clothes inside out and by asking one simple question: Who made my clothes? We want them to take be curious, to do research, to ask questions and to do something in order to encourage more transparency and respect."

The event is being carried out through social networks including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #insideout. Internet users have been asked, in particular, to take photos of themselves wearing their clothes inside or showing their labels, and then to share them.

The event is taking place while the humanitarian associations ‘Peuples Solidaires’ and the ‘Collectif Ethique sur l’Etiquette’, are calling on Benetton, Auchan and Carrefour to share in compensation for the victims of Rana Plaza. A demonstration was held in Paris on April 7 in support of the cause.
