Published
Nov 4, 2013

Many real estate professionals will come together in Cannes between 13 and 15 November for the international retail property market show, MAPIC. For this 19th edition of the show, organizer Reed Midem has brought together 2300 exhibiting companies to present their various real estate opportunities.

Historically focused on European activity, MAPIC has opened itself up to the international market and for this edition has put special focus on China, India, Russia and Brazil. Projects promoted at the event include Campo Grande Retail Center in Brazil, Suzhou Integrated Development in China, the DLF Mall of India and three Dreamworks projects mixing theme parks and commercial centres in Russia (St Petersburg, Moscow and Yekaterinburg).

Countries such as Turkey, who are typically present at the show, will still have a strong presence. Emaar Turkey will present a mixed-use project located in Camlıca, on the Asian side of Istanbul spanning 66,000 m² which will feature luxury homes, a five-star hotel and a shopping centre.

Aside from the spotlight on commerical real estate projects by territory, MAPIC also has scheduled in debates on subjects that are gaining momentum in the retailing world. The programme will feature talks on pop-up stores and travel retail in train stations and subways.

After its first Digital Summit last year, MAPIC is pushing forward with all things digital and has put a spotlight on the digital mediums and multi-channel retailing.

British company Land Securities Properties Limited and its project with Trinity Leeds will be showcased as an exemplar in multi-channel retailing. Launched in March of this year, the centre features Wi-Fi connection through-out, as well as touch screens and digital information points to help enhance the shopping experience. Amongst other themes raised in the talks will be ‘click-and-collect’ and showrooming.

Retail specialist CBRE is currently working on a study on how commercial centre owners and retailers and shopping centre owners are integrating digital elements into their strategies., a subject that will follow through to MAPIC’s Digital Summit.

As for the MAPIC Awards, the year the show has a record number of entries from 24 countries across the world. The awards ceremony and after-party will take place on Thursday 14th November.

Amongst those shortlisted are Charming Charlie, Vans and JD Sports Fashion for Best Fashion and Footwear Retail Concept and The Body Shop, JD Sports Fashion and German retailer Media Markt for Best Omnichannel Strategy. Primark, Bestseller, Yves Rocher and Starbucks will fight it out for the award for Best Retail Global Expansion.
