The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) announced Carolina Herrera will be honored with its prestigious Étoile Award on May 20. SCAD will also host a dual exhibition of Herrera's designs, “Refined Irreverence,” curated by Rafael Gomes, SCAD director of fashion and exhibitions.

The Étoile Award honors past and present outstanding achievements in style and design. Previous honorees include Pierre Cardin, David Yurman, Catherine Deneuve, Cornelia Guest, Russell Simmons and Dakota Jackson, among others.

The university’s dual exhibition of Herrera’s designs, “Refined Irreverence,” opens simultaneously at SCAD Fash Museum of Fashion + Film and at the SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah on May 20. Curator Rafael Gomes selected over 75 garments ranging from Herrera’s inaugural 1981 collection to the present for the exhibition.

The collection will include runway looks, bridal collections and red-carpet gowns worn by Michelle Obama, Taylor Swift, Tina Fey, Renée Zellweger and Lucy Liu, as well as works from Herrera's personal collection.

Carolina Herrera, born in Caracas, Venezuela, presented her first self-named capsule collection in 1981 with the encouragement of Diana Vreeland, legendary Vogue Editor-in-Chief. She is known for her sophisticated designs and influence on fashion.
