Scoop necks, micro bikinis, men's co-ords are key for SS23 swimwear - report

Stylight has released its latest trends report with a focus on swimwear and said that scoop necks, mermaid styles and micro bikinis are riding high for women while colourful camo, matching sets and retro are hot for men.

Dolce & Gabbana

The search platform for fashion, beauty, and interiors said that scoop-neck swimwear is seeing demand 20 times higher than last year. “Rounder, deeper necklines seem to be in popular demand compared to the classic V-neck or triangle shapes. Reminiscent of more retro silhouettes, we’re seeing this style along with low, scoop backs and high-cut legs – which really give us an 80s vibe,” it said.

As for micro bikinis, demand has increased by over 1,000% compared to last year and is being helped by shots of celebrities such as Emily Ratajkowski lounging beachside in ultra-skimpy bikini bottoms.

Meanwhile, Mermaidcore is also hot and that trend means "shimmering and shiny swimwear in beautiful blues, greens, and coral colours”. On Stylight, "the demand for shimmering bikinis and swimsuits is already 27% higher than last year”.

It added that it may be no coincidence that the release of the remake of Disney classic The Little Mermaid is due this summer.

A complete contrast comes with ruffles that were “a bit out of the spotlight last year”, but are “in full swing” for SS23. Ruffles are being added to tops and bottoms, “creating a playful and feminine look”. Stylight has seen a 240% increase in clicks for this swimwear category.

The company also said it has seen a trend for “extreme strings and crazy cutouts” for both one-pieces and bikinis. The trend “coincides with the increased versatility and multi-way styles we’ve seen on ready-to-wear looks over the past year”. Cutouts for one-piece swimwear are continuing to be inspired by streetwear styles and “we are seeing them become more and more extravagant”. Demand has jumped 43% for such styles.

For men, the “matchy matchy” trend (a matching button-up beach shirt and shorts) is also on the rise, driven by runway brand Etro that has seen demand increasing 36% this year

And Stylight is predicting a “dolce vita” retro vibe will be key too, with classic white or blue shorts with white stripes (either pinstripe or wide width) seeing demand up 175%.

Camouflage prints are also proving popular in both classic green/brown tones, but also in blue, grey or more colourful combinations. This is another trend that’s surging with demand rising over 1,000% year on year.

Additionally, Stylight said demand for hot vintage styles is also over 1,000% higher than last year with shorter, tight fitting swim trunks combined with vibrant, neon colours in lightweight polyester being reminiscent of 1980s athletic-wear.

Metallic sheens are also growing in popularity for men with demand up 41%.
