Shinola to open first-ever branded hotel in Detroit

Three things are synonymous with Shinola and they are watches, leather goods and its home city Detroit. The watchmaker and leather goods brand is expanding beyond products and will open a boutique hotel in Detroit with Bedrock Real Estate.

 
Shinola Hotel will be an eight-story building housing 130 rooms, restaurants, bars, a meeting space and stores. The hotel will be located at 1400 Woodward Avenue and will open in fall 2018. According to Crain’s Detroit, the location began as a hardware store and was most recently the home of Eastern Wig & Hair Co. The building will begin renovations in November.
 
Quicken Loans co-founder Dan Gilbert owns Bedrock Real Estate and is a partner of Shinola founder Tom Kartsotis. Gilbert became an investor in Kartsotis’ company some time ago, and now they are partnering on the Shinola Hotel, which is the first for Kartsotis and the Shinola brand and the second for Gilbert.

Shinola currently operates close to 20 stores globally.
