Shopify to launch U.S. fulfillment network

Canadian e-commerce service provider Shopify Inc. unveiled on Wednesday several new innovations including the launch of the company’s first-ever fulfillment network at its annual conference, known as Shopify Unite.
By the end of this year, the Ottawa-based commerce platform announced that it will roll out a dedicated network of fulfillment centers that will allow direct-to-consumer brands to make more timely deliveries, and provide lower shipping costs, to better compete against commerce giants like Amazon.
The network of centres will provide warehousing and shipping services, as well as inventory technology to ultimately help merchants distribute their products more efficiently.
The company said it plans to spend $1 billion to set up the network in the U.S. with qualifying U.S. merchants now able to apply for early access to Shopify fulfillment network online.
Plans for the fulfillment network were unveiled along with new online features such as a more scalable point-of-sale software; the ability to display products in video and 3D models; and a new-and-improved overall store design experience. It also added 11 new language capabilities; a new translation API; and added a multi-currency payments system, among other features.
“Shopify’s real power comes from the variety and strength of our ecosystem,” said Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke, in a news statement.
"Unite gives our developer and partner community access to our product roadmap. Together, and only together, we can shape the future of commerce and empower entrepreneurs around the world.”
The Ottawa-based company raised its 2019 earnings forecast back in April when it posted a surprise quarterly profit.
It currently expects full-year adjusted operating income of $20 million to $30 million, while revenue is expected in the range of $1.48 billion to $1.50 billion.
This year, it’s one of Canada’s top-performing stock after more than doubling. Shopify currently powers over 800,000 businesses in approximately 175 countries including brands such as Unilever, Kylie Cosmetics, Allbirds, MVMT, and more.
