Nov 27, 2012
Denim specialists from denimandjeans.com have compiled a 180-page document on the world’s denim industry. Sandeep Agarwal, who boasts 20 years of experience in the sector, headed the report named ‘World Denim Market: production and consumption 2012’, grouping statistics from more than 100 companies working in the sector.
The report pinpoints some interesting subjects and highlights important realities in the market. Whereas before 1970 practically all denim was manufactured in the United States, today’s horizon is somewhat different. It is estimated that global production of denim is at 7.3 billion metres per year, in 30 countries across 5 continents with Asia dominating the scene, contributing 70% of this figure.
The study underlines the reduction in consumption of the West in the world denim market. The America and European markets combined represent only 27% of the world’s denim demand. China, India and South America are proving to be today’s important markets. Despite demands, consumption remains high in Europe and the United States with 1.9 pair of jeans per person per year while China and India are down at 0.5 per person. This suggests a high demand potential in China.
In addition to a market overview, contributing authors give insights to their work, their analysis and consumption prediction for 2021.
