Swatch teams up with Centre Pompidou in Paris for art-inspired watch collection

After collaborating with the Louvre, Swatch has inked a new partnership deal in Paris, with the Centre Pompidou museum. On Tuesday, the Swiss swatch-maker, famous for its watches’ quirky style, staged a gala evening at the Centre Pompidou to launch a new collection inspired by six masterpieces exhibited at the musuem. They are paintings by Frida Kahlo, Amedeo Modigliani, Piet Mondrian and Vassily Kandinsky, as well as two works by Robert Delaunay.

The Swatch model inspired by a Vassily Kandinsky painting - Swatch

The six masterpieces’ colours and graphics are reproduced in the collection’s watches, albeit re-imagined in Swatch’s typical tongue-in-cheek style, with unexpected details. Each model’s dial, bracelet and box replicate the paintings’ most recognisable features.

A woman's portrait by Amedeo Modigliani, two paintings by Robert Delaunay, ‘Manège de Cochons’ and ‘La Tour Eiffel’, a self-portrait by Frida Kahlo, an abstract geometric work in bright colours by Piet Mondrian, and the ‘Bleu de Ciel’ painting by Vassily Kandinsky.

The Swatch X Centre Pompidou collection is available in-store and online from March 10 2022. It is also be on sale at the Centre Pompidou museum shops and at boutique.centrepompidou.fr.

In 1985, Swatch pioneered the first watch collaboration with the art world, and since 2018 it has worked with several major museums, among them the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum in Madrid, the Louvre in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, and now the Centre Pompidou.

This is not the first time that Swatch has joined forces with the Centre Pompidou. They first collaborated in 1985, with the presentation of the first Swatch Art Special model with Kiki Picasso at the museum. In 1999, Swatch introduced the Jelly Piano watch, inspired by the Centre Pompidou building, designed by architect Renzo Piano with Richard Rogers. The same year, during the museum's renovation, Swatch created the world’s largest external panel, with a poster bearing the inscription ‘Vous aussi, vous êtes notre musée’ (You too are our museum), as the watch-maker wrote in its press release.
