Target to introduce m-commerce

Published
Jan 26, 2017

Target will begin launching a mobile payment app, allowing customers to use their smartphones to check out in Target brick-and-mortar stores.

Target's mobile Cartwheel app - Target

Although Target is staying hush-hush on the project, the retailer has announced that the roll-out will begin with a release of the payment app to Target REDcard holders. Target has not announced if the payment app will be integrated into Target’s Cartwheel App, which currently boasts over 30 million users, or if it will be a stand-alone application.

Marketing research site eMarketer found that mobile payment adopting will grow in the near future, with the expected number of users to jump to 76 million between 2017 and 2020. Even though mobile payment options are set to grow, mobile payment is projected to account for only 1.2% of this year's projected $5 trillion in retail sales.

Kohls and Walmart have already launched similar efforts. The Kohl’s Pay app allows customers to pay for items in Kohl’s stores, earning rewards every time a product is scanned. Walmart’s mobile payment app, Walmart Pay, lets customers bring their item to the checkout like a regular cash-out experience, but instead of a credit card, customers can pay via their smartphone.
