The Museum at FIT will open its Uniformity exhibit at the Fashion & Textile Gallery on May 20, 2016.

A 1920s football uniform and Geoffrey Beene football jersey dress from fall 1987, both from The Museum at FIT's permanent collection.

Uniformity will explore the history of uniforms specifically its role in society and its influence on high fashion. The exhibit will focus on four categories of uniforms, which are military, work, school and sports. The uniform details of each category continue to be referenced in the fashion industry, like cargo pants, epaulets, and sports jersey numbers among others.

The exhibition will house over 70 objects from the museum’s permanent collection, many of which have never been on view before. Two styles that will be on view are a football uniform from 1920 and a football jersey dress from the Geoffrey Beene fall 1987 collection.

Uniformity will be run from May 20 through November 19, 2016.
