International Flavors & Fragrances Inc. on Tuesday honored perfumer and industry legend Sophia Grojsman with the Fragrance Foundation Perfumer of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2016 Fragrance Foundation Awards at Lincoln Center in New York City.
Sophia began as an IFF lab technician in 1966 and stayed with the company for 50 years. While at the company, she worked with some of the greatest IFF perfumers including Ernest Shiftan and Josephine Catapano, and she created more than 30 bestselling fine fragrances. Some fragrances include Estée Lauder Beautiful, Spellbound and White Linen, Celine Magic, Calvin Klein Eternity and Yves Saint Laurent Paris, Paris Premieres Roses with Dominique Ropion and Laurent Bruyere, and Parisienne with Sophie Labbé, among others.
“When I think about a fragrance, I think of it as an expression of both myself and the person with whom I am working with at the moment. It is an exceptional experience to have been able to use my talents to make people happy for so many years,” said Sophia. “During my time at IFF, they gave me a chance to explore and tell stories of femininity and strength, and I loved it. Being named The Fragrance Foundation Lifetime Achievement awardee is an honor and I am proud to share it – because fragrance is for everyone.”
Throughout her career, Sophia has received many accomplishments and accolades including the Achiever Award by Cosmetic Executive Women in 1994, the Living Legacy Award by the American Society of Perfumers in 1996, and the Lifetime Achievement Award by Cosmetic Executive Women in 1999. In addition, The Fragrance Foundation has inducted many of her creations and collaborations in the Fragrance Hall of Fame.
